Teaching Context
School Profile
The primary school I was placed in for internship and final year prac is situated in a multicultural suburb and the school is diverse in that both the teacher and student cohorts are multicultural. The school is very inclusive, being one in only five schools in Perth which have an Intensive English Centre (IEC) for students with little or no English (WA Department of Education, n.d.). There is also a sensory learning room for students with special needs. There are many programs available including the Primary Extension and Challenge (PEAC) for identified students, instrumental music, environmental education programs (vegetable garden), physical education program, music program (school choir) and dance activities (DoE, n.d.). There are specialist teachers for science, LOTE – German, sport and library. The school has embraced the TRIBES approach to support positive social behaviour. For both inter and intra-personal development the PATHS Curriculum has recently been implemented.
Class Profile
The class is diverse in cultural background and academic stages at a pre-primary level. Naturally a class of pre-primary aged children are at varying knowledge and ability stages as they are still developing in all domains at different rates (Kitson & Merry, 1997). There are a total of 23 students; some have English as their second language and others as an additional language. There are two students who have fairly limited English knowledge and skills. One particular student who has English as an additional language is particularly bright in most academic areas and can read fluently. Cultural backgrounds of the students include Anglo-Australian, Indigenous Australian, Maori, Asian and Middle Eastern. Overall these students are well mannered and behaved, have great sense of humour and are pretty cluey :) They have been a joy to teach!
