My Teaching & Learning Philosophy
"Why educate? To help students understand the world around them & talents within them, to become fulfilled individuals and compassionate citizens" - Sir Ken Robinson.
I believe that positive relationships with students, teachers and parents underpin every aspect of teaching and learning.
Effective learning content would draw on students’ interests, future goals and aspirations. For this to occur, I must know the students well. Like information processing theorists the format of the learning content would go from the known to the unknown. I would regularly provide independent and collaborative projects and tasks that are authentic, creative and interdisciplinary. I believe that effective learning also involves note-booking, various ICT tools, literature, real-life experiences, intrinsic motivation, interaction with peers and adults and hands-on tasks. Effective learning occurs when students spontaneously and voluntarily learn according to interests; this is similar to self-regulated and humanistic learning. I would incorporate students’ self-discovery learning into formal learning and teaching. I understand that students are inquirers and therefore need to encourage discussion and questioning. As a teacher my main roles would be to guide, model and scaffold. I also need to cater to each students’ needs, abilities and learning styles. I would achieve this by implementing Bloom’s Multiple Intelligences.
I believe that the learning environment needs to be well-resourced, stimulating and safe. Students would also have opportunities to learn outside the classroom.

How Beliefs & Prior Experiences Impact My Philosophy
Throughout my educational experiences I have learnt best in an environment where I was surrounded by people who knew me well and had positive relationships with. I have enjoyed and been engaged in learning when it related to my interests. For me, self-directed learning was/is the best method of education. During upper middle childhood I used note-booking for recording information of interest. As soon as I could read proficiently books opened up a wealth of knowledge to me, which is why I believe that if a child has a love of literature they can learn anything. It is good for learning to be challenging, but it must also be achievable. From my observations and experience project-based learning is fun, meaningful and in-depth.
